Wiser than Men

1 Corinthians 1:25

“The foolishness of God is wiser than men…”

We so often think we know what’s best, don’t we? Yet time and again the Bible shows us just how wrong we can be.

Adam and Eve reached for the fruit, convinced it would make them wise like God. They reached for wisdom and ended up with shame. The builders of Babel thought a great tower would keep everyone together and secure. Instead, the very thing they feared happened, and God scattered them across the earth. Jonah was certain that running toward Tarshish was the smart way to escape God’s call. It landed him in the belly of a fish.

Each of these choices seemed wise in the moment. In fact, the people making them were convinced they were right. But God’s wisdom sees beyond the moment and knows where every road will lead.

And that is part of Paul’s point. Sometimes what God asks may even look foolish to us. But what looks foolish from our side may actually be the wisdom of God.

If we’re honest, we’ve all been there ourselves. We were certain we were doing the smart thing, but years later we can see just how far off we were.

When God’s way does not make sense to us, that may be the very moment we need to trust Him most.

Father, forgive us for the times we’ve trusted our own understanding instead of leaning on Yours.
