Tombstones

2 Timothy 4:7
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”

I’ve been in more cemeteries than most. A common inscription on headstones is “Gone, but not forgotten.”

Years ago, when it came time for me to select an epitaph for my sweet wife, I chose a Scripture: “I thank my God every time I remember you” (Philippians 1:3).

Much time has passed since I selected that quote, but it is still perfect for her. Anyone who knows her would agree with me.

I reflect on it and wonder what someone might inscribe for me. Let me ask: What Scripture fits your life? Maybe one of these fits:

“God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever” (Psalm 73:26).

“Return to your rest, O my soul, for the LORD has been good to you” (Psalm 116:7).

While we still live, we can pursue earthly dreams while living in a way that makes it easy for someone to write, “Not gone and not forgotten.”

Prayer: Lord, help me live a life that ends in You and shows others the way.

I’m Lonnie Davis, and these are thoughts worth thinking.
