Poor?

Revelation 2:9
“I know your affliction and your poverty, though you are rich!”

Over the years, I’ve heard people say, “I’m poor.” I sometimes wonder if we really understand what poverty looks like.

Imagine waking up on a dirt floor because you don’t own a bed. There’s no electricity, no indoor bathroom, and no faucet to turn on. You may have to walk miles for water, and tonight your children may go to bed hungry. For millions of people, this isn’t something to imagine. It’s everyday life.

I don’t mention these things to make anyone feel guilty, but because we can become so concerned about what we lack that we forget how much we have.

Jesus looked at the Christians in Smyrna. They were suffering and poor, and yet He said, “Though you are rich!” He knew their circumstances, but He also knew the treasures they possessed that money could never buy.

Perhaps today we ought to spend less time counting what we don’t have and more time appreciating what we do.

And never forget, the greatest riches are not the things you own, but the things you could never buy.

Prayer: Father, help me recognize my blessings and treasure the riches that only You can give.

I’m Lonnie Davis, and this is a thought worth thinking.
