Exodus 20:9-10
“Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God.”
Most people know what God said about the seventh day. Don’t work. Rest. But sometimes we jump so quickly to verse 10 that we miss what God said in verse 9.
“Six days you shall labor and do all your work.”
God commanded rest, but He also commanded work.
Work was never meant to be a curse. Before sin entered the world, God placed Adam in the garden “to work it and keep it” (Genesis 2:15). We were created to do something useful with our lives.
There is dignity in work. Whether we are earning a paycheck, raising children, cleaning a house, helping a neighbor, teaching a class, or serving someone who needs us, useful work gives purpose to our days.
God did not say, “Work all the time.” Neither did He say, “Rest all the time.” There is a rhythm to a well-lived life.
Six days, work. Then rest.
Prayer: Lord, make me willing, faithful, and diligent in my work.
