Compared to Whom?

We were eating lunch with an old golfer. I told him my 12-year-old son was going to take up golf. The old man, a long-time golfer, volunteered great advice. He said, “Jeremy, when you play golf, don’t try to beat the other person. You can always find someone to beat. You can always find someone who can beat you. So can I. Just play for the joy of it.”

He was saying, “Don’t spend your time comparing yourself to other folks.” If you do, it will make you either proud or discouraged, but rarely grateful. The grateful life is where real joy is found. After all, you do not need to be better than someone else.

Here is a Bible verse that teaches this: 2 Corinthians 10:12

“We do not dare to classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they show their ignorance.”

Prayer: Lord, Help me to live up to what you gave to me and not another.

I’m Lonnie Davis, and these are thoughts worth thinking.
