Raising Abel

Genesis 4:2

“Later she gave birth to Cain’s brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, while Cain was a tiller of the soil.”

When I was a teen, I told my preacher that someone was “Raising Cain.” He responded, “Wouldn’t it be better if they were raising Abel?” I answered, “Yes it would.” Unfortunately Cain got angry and murdered his brother, Abel,

Do you ever think about Abel? His story is short. His life was even shorter. But heaven has not forgotten him.

He was a shepherd. He gave God his best, not leftovers, not second choices, but he offered God the firstborn of his flock. That offering revealed his heart.

He died young. He never built a city. He never wrote a book. But Jesus called him “Righteous Abel,” and Hebrews says “by faith he still speaks, even though he is dead.”

A life does not have to be long to matter. It does have to be faithful.

I’m Lonnie Davis and these are thoughts worth thinking.

Prayer: Lord, may my worship be costly, my faith be real, and my life leave an example that outlasts me.
